Catholic Charities’ food pantry is open Monday – Thursday from 10 am – 2 pm. The food pantry is located at 2505 Maine Ave in Metairie. Clients should go down the driveway to the left of the building. "An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints". To gain indulgences, whether plenary or partial, it is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time the indulgenced work is completed. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: — have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; — have sacramentally confessed their sins; — receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); — pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff. It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or after the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope's intentions is left to the choice of the faithful, but an "Our Father" and a "Hail Mary" are suggested. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intentions are required for each plenary indulgence. For the sake of those legitimately impeded, confessors can commute both the work prescribed and the conditions required (except, obviously, detachment from even venial sin). Indulgences can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth.

The Gretna Historical Society was founded in Gretna, Louisiana in 1969 by Lloyd E. Gomez (insurance man, volunteer firefighter, and community activist), who descended from Gretna pioneers, German immigrants Claudius and Catherine Nuss Strehle. The articles of incorporation for the GHS were drafted by Gretna attorney Everette F. Gauthreaux and signed in his law office on October 26, 1969. Today the GHS operates the Gretna Historical Society Museum Complex at the corner of Lafayette Street at 2nd. It consists of three 19th century Creole cottages, a blacksmith shop, and the Louisiana Fire Museum. The GHS also owns and maintains the caboose and train depot on Huey P. Long Avenue at 4th Street. There are no requirements for membership in the GHS, other than the timely payment of annual membership dues of $20 per person. Monthly meetings are usually held at the St Joseph's complex at the corner of Newton and 7th Streets, on the second Thursday of every month at 7:00 pm; but due to Covid, they are presently suspended. Guests and prospective members are always welcome to attend the meetings. The society newsletter, Gretna Chronicles, is published monthly and mailed to its members.

We are pleased to announce that starting in 2021, the Archdiocese of New Orleans will host an annual wedding anniversary celebration for those couples who have been married for 25 years. The 2021 Silver Anniversary celebration will take place on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at 3:00 PM at St Joseph Church in New Orleans. This event is only for couples married in the year 1996 in celebration of their 25 Wedding Anniversary. Please Note: This celebration will not be a Mass, but a prayer service. Attendance of Mass for Sunday obligation will have to be met within one’s respective parish. If you will be celebrating your 25 Wedding Anniversary next year (married in the year 1996) and wish to attend, please register with the parish office by January 15, 2021.

Basic workshops for new Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and basic workshops for readers will be presented this Spring by the Office of Worship. Attendance at the workshop for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion is required before a person can be delegated by the Archbishop to serve in this ministry.
